In Memory of Dr. Elliot W. Strong
Our father/grandfather, Dr. Elliot W. Strong, dedicated his life to fighting cancer. Dr. Strong was born in Concord, MA on August 7, 1930. He graduated Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa from Tufts College in Medford, MA in 1952 and from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston in 1956. He served as an intern and resident in surgery at Hartford Hospital, Hartford, CT from 1956-1961. In his third year there he rotated to Memorial Hospital in NYC, where he completed a surgical oncology residency. Upon completion of his training, he returned to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where he was appointed to the staff of the Head and Neck Service, Department of Surgery. He was appointed to the full-time surgical staff in 1967 and became Chief of the Head and Neck Service in 1969, a position he held until 1992. Dr. Strong also served on multiple committees for many different medical societies, including the Society of Head and Neck Surgeons, the American Radium Society, the American Cancer Society, the Society for Surgical Oncology, and the American College of Surgeons. He was co-program chair for the first two international head and neck conferences, and was the first president of the New York Head and Neck Society from 1979-1981. He was also president of the Society of Head and Neck Surgeons from 1980-81, and president of the American Radium Society from 1989-1990. He was Chairman of the Head and Neck Contacts Program at the National Cancer Institute, leading the most expensive and extensive research study of the impact of chemotherapy on head and neck cancer to date. While Dr. Strong was dedicated to serving his profession and fighting cancer, he was most devoted to his patients. When he stepped down from Chief of Head and Neck Surgery, hundreds of his patients attended his reception and thanked our family for sacrificing our time with him so that he could care so thoughtfully and attentively for his patients. He was also revered by those who worked with him– from fellow surgeons to nurses to administrative assistants. Dr. Strong retired from active practice in July, 1999.
Thank you so much for your donation in our father's/grandfather's memory, so that his life's work can carry on into the future.
With deep appreciation,
The Strong Family
