Events

What is Fred's Team?
Fred’s Team is an athletic fundraising program dedicated to bringing us closer to a world without cancer. Our official events include the NYC Marathon, the Boston Marathon, and the NYC Half. You can also participate in any race through our Choose Your Own Event program. Fred’s Team provides exclusive benefits for both our official events and our Choose Your Own Event program, giving each participant an unbeatable experience in their effort to cross the finish line. The race against cancer is personal, and when you participate with Fred’s Team, you can allocate the money you raise to the area of research of your choice at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC).

Named after running legend Fred Lebow, the program has raised over $56 million since 1995. Help Fred's Team make a difference by joining us, by supporting a an individual or team, or by making a general gift to fund cancer research at MSKCC.

I’d like to participate in a race that’s not an official event. Can I still support Fred’s Team?

When I register with Fred's Team, do I automatically get an entry into the event?
Fred's Team has a limited number of guaranteed spots for our official events. We allocate our guaranteed entries on a first-come, first-served basis. If you’re registering for our Choose Your Own event program, you must have your own race entry.

Can I register for Fred's Team even if I have my own entry into the race?
Yes! Register as a participant with their own entry here.. You'll still enjoy all of the exclusive benefits we offer—including comprehensive training, an online fundraising page with email tool, a team uniform, email support and more!

Is there a limit to the number of participants per event?
Fred's Team has a limited number of guaranteed entries available for our official events. These entries are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Once all entries are filled, any remaining members will be placed on a wait list and notified if a spot becomes available. If you have joined Fred's Team in the past, (or if you've registered for an event and canceled), any outstanding fundraising balance must be fulfilled in order to qualify for one of these spots.

What is the registration fee?
When you register for an official event, your $100 registration fee is applied toward your fundraising requirement. If you're participating in Choose Your Own Event, your $50 registration fee is applied toward your fundraising requirement.

Your uniform will be shipped to you shortly upon achieving at least half of your fundraising requirement.

Absolutely. Visit the Share Your Story page to submit your story. With your permission and approval, we may publish your story on our website, social media sites and/or other communications vehicles.

Fundraising and Donations

Is there a fundraising requirement for each event?
Yes, each Fred’s Team event has a fundraising requirement, and participants are encouraged to surpass this goal to make an even bigger impact in the fight against cancer. This requirement is set to maximize the funds we are able to direct to cancer research.

What is the due date for meeting the fundraising requirement?
If you are participating in a Fred's Team official event, you are required to fulfill your fundraising requirement by the deadline listed in the fundraising agreement for that event.

What is the fundraising policy for the NYC Marathon?
Participants running the NYC Marathon who need a Fred’s Team race entry are required to fulfill their respective fundraising requirement ($3,500 or $6,000) by the fundraising deadline.

I’m a registered participant. Where do I begin with my fundraising?
Online fundraising is easy! Start by logging in to your participant center to customize your personal page. From there, you can import your contacts and send emails to potential donors. You also have online access to fundraising tips, templates, and donation forms, and other fundraising materials. Set your goals high!

Please note: Funds raised for all Fred's Team events must come through your online Fred's Team fundraising page or by check/money order payable to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Donations from a third party fundraising site (e.g. Active, Crowdrise, etc) cannot be counted towards your fundraising requirement.

Can I fundraise with friends?
While each participant is responsible for his or her individual fundraising requirement, you can start a team and receive team gifts!

What information can I post on my Fred's Team fundraising page?
We encourage you to share your story and customize your page. All customized content and photos are subject to MSKCC review and approval. If you plan to include personal information about other people on your fundraising page, including family members or friends whose lives have been touched by cancer, please be sure to consult with them first in case they have concerns about seeing such information made public.

Where do I mail checks given to me by donors?
Some people may prefer to hand you their donation. It's easy to make sure that these "offline" gifts are counted toward your fundraising total. Simply print and fill out the donation form, enclose it with your check, and mail to:

How long will it take for gifts to be processed and counted toward my fundraising goal?
Online donations are processed automatically and immediately applied to your fundraising total. Offline gifts (made by check or money order) will be processed and applied to your fundraising total within seven to ten business days after they are received.

How do I make a gift to an individual or team?
It's simple! Visit our donate page to search. If you prefer, you can use our printable mail-in form to make a gift.

I have just made an online gift. When can I expect my gift to appear on the fundraising honor roll?
Please note that, while your gift will be immediately credited to the individual specified, it may take as long as one hour for your donation to be accurately reflected on the website’s fundraising honor roll. If after one hour you do not see the gift displayed correctly, please contact us.

What type of tax acknowledgment will I receive for my donation and when will I receive it?
When you make an online gift, you will receive an email confirmation and acknowledgment as soon as your transaction is complete. For all offline gifts, you will receive a written acknowledgment in the mail.

What is a matching gift program? How do I participate?
Many organizations have programs that match the charitable contributions of their employees. This can double or triple the amount of a donation, at no additional cost to the employee! Team

Can I start my own team within Fred’s Team?
Yes! We would love for you to invite friends, family or colleagues to join, and you can start your own team for the NYC Marathon or for Choose Your Own Event. Go to our Register page and follow the registration process.

Can I fundraise with my teammates?
Yes! You will have both an individual fundraising page and team fundraising page. On your team page, you’ll also be able to receive donations. All team gifts will be evenly distributed. Please note: each member of the team is responsible for fulfilling his or her individual fundraising requirement.

Training

What training support will I receive?
You'll get the expert guidance and support you need to reach your goal. Benefits include a training chart, nutrition advice and tips from our U.S. Certified Triathlon and Track & Field coaches! We also have mentors and assistant coaches to guide you, and NYC Marathon and NYC Half runners have the opportunity to participate in team training runs.

Where do I find the Fred’s Team NYC Marathon training run schedule?
You’ll find your training schedule in your participant center. Long training runs begin in June and weekday workouts start in July.

What happens if I get injured? Is there a cancellation policy?
If you are unable to participate in an official Fred's Team event due to illness, injury or conflict, you are obligated to notify Fred's Team immediately. If you received a guaranteed entry from Fred's Team, and did not cancel by the cancellation date, you will still be responsible for fulfilling the minimum fundraising requirement. Please contact us for each event’s specific cancellation policy. All donations received are non-refundable and non-transferrable.
