Online registration is now open for
Cycle for Survival 2010, the indoor team cycling fundraiser benefiting cancer research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Cyclists of all abilities can register online at
www.cycleforsurvival.org to form a team or join an existing team to ride at the event. Now in its fourth year, Cycle for Survival has expanded to accommodate a total of 400 teams riding at two Equinox locations in New York City on January 31, 2010, and an additional 100 teams at the new Chicago location on February 6, 2010. Out-of-town participants can register to ride on satellite teams of any size at any time during the year.
"Cycle for Survival has been a grassroots effort and it has blossomed into something very special," explained Jennifer Goodman Linn, event founder and participant. "The numbers of participants and the donation totals have more than doubled each year since 2007. The outpouring of enthusiasm and support has been overwhelming, and we hope to see more new faces at Cycle 2010. It's truly an unforgettable experience."
Founded in 2007, Cycle for Survival has raised more than $2 million in support of research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering on rare cancers. In the aggregate, these cancers affect millions of people but do not attract the research dollars needed for progress in treatment. "By gaining a better understanding of the basic biology of these types of cancers, we hope to develop more precise treatments that focus on specific targets in the cancer cell." said Dr. Robert Maki, associate attending physician and co-director of the Adult Sarcoma Program in Memorial Sloan-Kettering's Department of Medicine.
Funds from the 2009 event have been allocated to support new research studies and clinical trials. Proceeds from the first two Cycle for Survival events funded a clinical trial that has led to a new chemotherapy regimen more effective at shrinking tumors in patients with some forms of cancer.
Cycle for Survival participants collect donations though team fundraising campaigns conducted via the event's Web site. Visit
