Gifts of cash or cash equivalents can either be paid outright in a single installment or as a pledge to be fulfilled over a period of several years. A cash gift may entitle the donor to a charitable deduction of up to 50 percent of adjusted gross income annually, with a carry-over provision of up to five years should the value of the gift exceed 50 percent of the individual donor’s adjusted gross income.
Gifts of appreciated securities (stocks and bonds) offer donors a range of potential benefits such as the avoidance of capital gains taxes when the securities have been held long-term—that is, for more than one year. Such gifts are deductible up to 30 percent of adjusted gross income annually, with a carry-over provision of up to five years should the value of the gift exceed 30 percent of the donor’s adjusted gross income.
