Pediatric Cancer Facts

What are the Facts?

  • Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) is a world leader in the diagnosis, treatment, and care of childhood cancers. We treat more children with pediatric cancers than any other institution—including those that focus only on children. The incredible progress made at MSK directly impacts cancer centers and local hospitals worldwide.
  • In 2014, about 15,780 children and adolescents from newborn to 19 years of age were diagnosed with cancer in the United States.
  • Childhood leukemia is the most common form of childhood cancer, accounting for 30 percent of diagnoses. Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) and acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) are most frequently diagnosed.
  • Research for pediatric cancers is vastly underfunded. Virtually all funding for pediatric cancer comes from private donations and the United States government.

Kids Walk is committed to changing these statistics. Through the development of new and better treatment options, our mission is to return kids home to resume their lives—cancer free.
