Members help in organizing events and soliciting donations for programs to help the hospital's youngest patients.

The Children's Committee organizes three major events in Pediatrics every year -- the Halloween Party, the Holiday Celebration, and the Pediatric Prom. All of these events are desgined to bring fun and cheer to the hospital's youngest patients.

In preparation for the Halloween Party, the committee runs a costume and candy drive. Through Amazon.com, committee members and supporters can purchase Halloween costumes and accessories for our pediatric patients. You can participate in our Halloween celebration by going to Amazon.com and typing "The Society of MSKCC" in the wish list finder.

Patients and their families select from the hundreds of costumes donated. MSKCC's pediatric patients transform into pirates and princesses, ghouls and goblins, superheroes and star athletes and trick-or-treat throughout the hospital, stopping at nurses' stations and reception desks, stocked with candy donated through The Society, to fill their candy bags. The playroom and the exam rooms in the Pediatric Day Hospital are decorated for the occasion, and the Committee hires a magician to add mystery and wonder to the festivities.

The Holiday Celebration in Pediatrics is a joyful event. The Children's Committee sends letters requesting donations to companies and individuals who generously contribute their products to our holiday gift bags. Members of the committee then dedicate a day to stuff over 250 holiday gift bags filled with donated toys, clothes, DVDs, CDs, and more. Santa visits Pediatrics to hand out the overflowing gift bags. Each child has the opportunity to join Santa on his throne to whisper their holiday wishes in his ear as they are handed a gift bag. It is wonderful to see each child delight in his or her holiday surprises.

The Pediatric Prom is the most eagerly anticipated event for our pediatric patients. Everyone attends, from toddlers to teens and young adults, making it truly a unique Prom experience. It begins with the magic of “Promingdale's” -- a boutique of accessories, makeup, tuxedos, and, of course, prom gowns. The Committee secures dress and accessory donations from individuals and companies to help our female patients feel like princesses. Tuxedo bowties, cummerbunds, and shirts are donated for our young gentlemen and fun faux-tuxedo T-shirts are provided for our rebel male teens. Even makeup artists and manicurists donate their time to help our female patients primp before their Prom debut. A DJ is hired, and the event is catered with favorite hors d'oeuvres, from “chicken fingers” to pizza bagels and more.

The Children's Committee also provides funds for other pediatric events throughout the year, including Thanksgiving, St. Patrick's Day, and Mardi Gras parties, and assists with the purchase of toys as well as urgent care needs for patients, such as diapers.
