JOIN THE BATTLE. Beat Rare Cancers.
TEAM BUSTER in BOSTON
Andrea and Olivia first rode in Cycle for Survival in 2017, and the following year Olivia founded Team Buster so that family and friends could participate in this epically powerful, inspiring, and super fun event together.
Cycle for Survival quickly became the easiest context for friends to discuss (and even address) Andrea’s illness, as cancer unfortunately always appears to be such a taboo subject, which, in turn, is incredibly isolating. Fundraising, motivating, and pouring out energy that you had no idea was inside of you for a few hours on bikes was an outlet for our community to come together to support Andrea in what felt like a very meaningful and tangible way, raising money and spreading awareness about rare cancers.
This past year, Cycle was a huge beacon of hope for Andrea and his loved ones. Team Buster was the top team of 2019, raising $515,420, and Andrea raised the most out of every participant in the country, rallying friends and family to help in his fundraising efforts and spending hours reaching out from his hospital bed. All of our funds went directly to Andrea's amazing oncologist, Dr. Diane Reidy-Lagunes, for her research within 6 months of the event, as will be the case again this year.
Team Buster has grown from 15 people in 2018 to nearly 50 people in 2019, and it continues to grow still! 2020 will be the first year that we (somehow and with great sorrow) ride without Andrea, and it will also be the first year that Team Buster goes national, riding in events in New York and now Boston.
We ride for you, Andrea. For all of the hope and joy that you brought us, and to provide hope for future rare cancers warriors. You told us that you didn’t want your struggle to be for nothing, that you wanted us to keep living our fullest lives, and through Cycle we will honor this wish and ride in your glorious memory.
To Team Buster - Thank you for continuing on this tradition. Your support and enthusiasm means the world, and Andrea would be so proud of us all.
50% of People with Cancer Have a Rare Cancer | Did you know that, when combined, about half of all patients fighting cancer are fighting a rare cancer? These are cancers you’ve likely heard of — such as leukemia, lymphoma, thyroid, ovarian, brain, pancreatic, and all pediatric cancers.
6 Months for Fast Impact | Rare cancer research is underfunded, and too often people don’t have proven treatments. Time matters. Your gift will be in the hands of researchers six months after fundraising ends.
100% of the Funds Raised by Team Buster in 2020 will be Allocated to The Andrea Argenio Neuroendocrine Tumor Research Fund.
As a result of Team Buster's 2019 fundraising and the generosity of our donors, a new fund at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has been established in Andrea’s memory. The Andrea Argenio Neuroendocrine Tumor Research Fund was seeded with the more than $390,000 we raised during the 2019 events. Andrea’s oncologist, Dr. Diane Reidy-Lagunes, and her team will be using these funds, and the funds we raise in 2020, to advance some promising areas of research. One of the intended areas of focus is the Young Onset Gastrointestinal Cancer Program—a breakthrough initiative led by Dr. Andrea Cercek to research early onset gastrointestinal cancers in adolescents and young adults. The program will address the increasing rates of gastrointestinal malignancies in people under the age of 50 and the unique dynamics within this younger demographic.
