JOIN THE BATTLE. Beat Rare Cancers.
We ride for Alex Niles...
...because nobody should die from cancer at the age of 32.
100% of every dollar raised funds pioneering research.
We are committed to ensuring rare cancer patients get new and better treatment options. That's why we are raising money for Cycle for Survival. Our team's ride will fund research led by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center—benefiting patients worldwide.
Why this matters:
RARE CANCERS ARE MORE COMMON THAN YOU THINK.
Approximately 50% of all cancer patients are fighting a rare cancer. These are familiar diseases: pediatric cancers, leukemia, lymphoma—and thyroid, ovarian and pancreatic cancers. All are among the many types classified as rare.
Our friend Alex had stomach (gastric) cancer, a relatively rare cancer, as it is only the 16th most common cancer in the United States. Stomach cancer is even less common in patients diagnosed at a young age, like Alex was.
THERE AREN'T ENOUGH TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR PATIENTS.
Rare cancer patients often face limited or no treatment options. Cycle for Survival is committed to changing that by funding innovative clinical trials, studies, and research initiatives.
In 2014, it was estimated that more than 22,000 Americans will be diagnosed with stomach cancer and nearly 11,000 would die of the disease.
That number is far too high. Funding for stomach cancer research has DECREASED every year since 2009. (source: NHI)
