JOIN THE BATTLE. Beat Rare Cancers.
We ride for our daughter, wife, sister (-in-law), aunt, cousin, niece, and friend, Katie Hennemuth Reap.
In June 2014, just two weeks after becoming engaged and two months after her 29th birthday, Katie was diagnosed with a very rare adult case of Stage IV Rhabdomyosarcoma, an aggressive soft tissue cancer. From the moment of her diagnosis, Katie approached her situation with an equally rare and doubly infectious amount of courage, positivity, and spirit. She endured countless rounds of chemotherapy and radiation and faced every test result and hospital stay with humor and grace. She never once, through the entire course of her illness, lost her sense of hope and energy. Her will to live was just breathtaking.
In addition to the blanket of love provided by her sprawling support system, one major source of Katie’s optimism was Cycle for Survival. She would always say how important it was for people in her shoes, not just for the daily, clinical treatment options that C4S research has already produced, but also because of the hope it represented -- that the cure for her specific disease, and that of the other patients she came to know and care about, was just around the corner.
Katie passed away on October 21, 2015, after a heroic 16-month battle. In hindsight, we know now that 1) the disease was just too widespread by the time it was detected and 2) the subtype of cancer Katie had was just too rare and not yet well enough understood for the best treatment team in the world to eliminate it from her body. While we unfortunately can’t impact #1, we are absolutely on track to change #2!
You see, during her final days, Katie asked us to continue participating in Cycle for Survival every year. We, of course, promised her that we would. So here we are, Kate! And we’re on a mission! We are dedicated to continuing Katie‘s fight by supporting patients currently battling cancer and researchers doing the grinding work of developing treatment options that eradicate each and every subtype of cancer for good.
We miss Kate every single day. And though Cycle for Survival is not the same without her, our continued involvement is a fitting way to remember her and to keep hope alive for so many others. Kate launched Team Kate in 2015 with one team. Last year, we had almost 100 riders in 5 different cities. This is our second year as a “national” team, we’re continuing to grow. To date, we have raised over $380,000+, roughly three-quarters of which has gone specifically to sarcoma research.
We ride to honor our dear Kate’s final request. We ride to remember others who have bravely fought this terrible disease, to help and provide hope to those who are currently fighting, and to fund clinical treatments and find cures so that others won’t have to fight in the future. We will ride until the day comes when we no longer need to. This was our promise to Katie. Please help us to fulfill our goal and make a cancer-free future a reality!
With love and deep gratitude for your support,
