JOIN THE BATTLE. Beat Rare Cancers.
Last year on the day after Christmas our world was rocked by news from doctors at a local hospital that our three year old son, Calum's blood work looked off and the source was likely cancer. "CANCER" was a terrifying word to hear and only confirmed our greatest fears of the previous days and hours. We spent those first nights sleepless, immersed in research, tears, and prayer on the couch in his hospital room. Calum would be diagnosed two days later with Pre B-Cell ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia).
As any parent would, we sought out the best treatment possible for our son. Research and references led us to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center where we were admitted by the Pediatric Oncology team. We were blessed by their commitment to patient care from the moment we walked in the door. As pioneers in cancer research and treatment, MSKCC was in a position to provide the most cutting edge medical care but it was also their personal treatment, care, and support which kept us all strong and our spirits high through the most difficult periods of Calum's treatment.
We are happy to report that with care and support from the team at MSKCC, Calum is now in remission. The successful treatment Calum receives is thanks to the work done over many years by teams of doctors, researchers, and caregivers. Just 50 year ago, we probably would have lost Calum to Leukemia but, thanks to research, we have full confidence he will be cured once finished with his treatment protocol, just over three years from the date of his diagnosis. The team at MSKCC continues this work today, pushing cancer treatment forward. Their tireless work has led to tremendous advances and continues to give patients and caregivers the greatest possible gift in the fight against cancer; hope.
