Welcome to Shawn's Fundraising Page

Name: Shawn Guertin
Event: TCS New York City Marathon
Date: November 4, 2018

Hearing the news that a friend or family member has cancer can be devastating.  As a parent, hearing this news about your child takes this devastation to a different level.  In the summer of 2014 my son Sam was diagnosed with brain cancer.  As a result of the outstanding people, treatment and research being done at MSK, I am thrilled to tell you that today he is truly thriving in life.  In fact, in 2016 we completed the NYC Marathon together; father and son as well as two cancer survivors.   The tears in my eyes crossing the finish line were not just from the joy of finishing, but of a father overcome with emotion while reflecting upon Sam's journey to get there.  For this moment and all those that have followed, I am eternally grateful to the truly incredible and inspirational people at MSK.

After the race in 2017, Sam and I had the opportunity to visit the MSK Pediatric Cancer Center.  There, we encountered a young girl who had just had surgery similar to Sam's.  When I told her that Sam had the same condition I could see her immediately brighten up seeing Sam as he is today - vibrant, strong and healthy - but just as important I could see the flash of hope and optimism in her parent's eyes.  I could remember all too well what it felt like sitting at Sam's bedside.  That's why I'm running.

If the money I raise can save the life of even one child, can give one parent genuine hope, then every single step of training, every blister, every lost toe nail (yes, that does happen!) and every arthritic, achy knee will be worth it.

By donating to my race, you can help give doctors and researchers at MSK the critical funding they need to make groundbreaking discoveries and conduct lifesaving clinical trials. This year I intend to direct half of what I raise to Brain Cancer research and half to the Aubrey Fund for Pediatric Cancer.  Every donation - regardless of size -is another great stride towards progress—and provides hope to children and their families at a time when they need it the most.
