Welcome to My Fred's Team Page in loving memory of Eileen Phelan McGowan
Name: Lindsay Luttrell
I lost my Aunt Eileen, my mother's sister, after her long battle with brain cancer last July. I think experiencing that great loss accompanied by turning 35 sparked something in me to want to do more, do better and to challenge myself. I signed up for a 10k to raise money for cancer research and to celebrate Eileen's life. Of course, I had to immediately google "from couch to 10k" - I am not a runner! However, Eileen was an avid runner most of her life. I have vivid memories of her running all the way from the beach to our house growing up. I would be amazed at the distance she could run, yet it seemed effortless to her.
I'm running to raise money with Fred's Team to support critical cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). Eileen spent time at MSK for phase two of a clinical trial for a stem cell transplant. By donating to my race, you will be giving doctors and researchers at MSK the funding they need to make groundbreaking discoveries and conduct lifesaving clinical trials. Every dollar raised is another important stride toward progress - and brings us one step closer to a world without cancer.
Someone very close to me said "you've spent much of the last year in grief and I don't know how one comes back from that". So I'm hoping my very tiny part in contributing to the greater good of cancer research will be the first step in turning that pain into peace.
July 2nd would be Eileen's 61st birthday. July 5th will mark a year without her. So on July 4th I will lace up my new purple running shoes (her favorite color) and run in her memory, for those still fighting and those yet to be diagnosed. I would greatly appreciate your support, whether monetary or emotional. I'll need all the good vibes I can get!
