JOIN THE BATTLE. Beat Rare Cancers.
I am riding to raise money and awareness for cholangiocarcinoma- a dreaded biliary cancer from which I suffer. This year we have a 10-city team, which I'm leading with two amazing women, Lorraine Twohill in Palo Alto and Dannielle Dellerson Hayes in Washington, DC, and collectively we have raised a great deal putting us as the #1 Cycle for Survival team nationally.
With that said, we need all of your help to meet our goals, which will allow Dr. Ghassan Abou-Alfa, our extraordinary doctor at Memorial Sloan Kettering, to make further progress with treatment options for cholangiocarcinoma (with which Lorraine, Danielle and I have all been diagnosed this last year).
I also wanted to share an update on where I am. I've had about 40 rounds of chemotherapy and the good news is that I'm tolerating the chemo well and the nurses and staff at the hospital truly make the experience as positive as it can be. I won't call it pleasurable...but it's something that I feel very positive about – and makes me feel like I'm actively in the fight. I've also had a series of catscans - and in the aggregate, the main tumor is down to about half the size of where it was when we started, and the smaller growths gone or dying. The last scan showed that I was STABLE, which Dr. Abou-Alfa looks at as a huge victory. Of course, we will strive for continued shrinkage until we get rid of it! As with everything, there is comedy through this experience as well. The chemo produces it's own wealth of side effects - the funniest one to date has been that I've developed polka dots on the bottom of my feet. This is all normal and related to a change in skin pigmentation as a result of one of my medicines, but it gives me a good laugh.
So now our BIG ASK - particularly now that my tumor is stable - we are more committed than ever to support research that can help me and the countless other suffering from this terrible disease to find better treatment options and one day a cure.
A DREADED STATISTIC ABOUT THIS RARE FORM OF LIVER CANCER IS THAT THERE IS NO CURRENT CURE, AND THE HISTORICAL STATISTICS DESCRIBE A 2-3% FIVE-YEAR SURVIVAL RATE. WE ARE DETERMINED TO DEMOLISH THIS STATISTIC AND THIS DISEASE AND TO HELP THE GROWING RANKS OF PEOPLE AFFLICTED WITH THIS DISEASE (WHICH AT PRESENT IS TERRIBLY UNDER-FUNDED, AND THUS UNDER-RESEARCHED). PLEASE HELP US AND READ BELOW ON HOW -
